All these names are derived from a newspaper cutting saved by my grandmother, Valencia Ann Harper Olsen (née Penney) of the wedding of Herbert Gillies Penney and Lottie Affleck on Saturday 11 December 1909. Joyce and William Affleck have been most helpful, confirming what I had thought and supplying much new information. If you are a Penney (from South Shields) or an Affleck (from Gateshead) and are able to shed more light, I would be most grateful.
1. Mr. and Mrs. John Harper Penney were from South Shields.
2. Alderman Robert Affleck was from 'Bloomfield' Gateshead.
3. Herbert Gilles Penney was the second son of John Harper Penney.
4. Lottie Affleck was the only daughter of Robert Affleck.
5. They were married on Saturday 11/12/1909 at St. Georges Church in Gateshead.
6. Mr. Harry G. Wicks was a cousin of Herbert Gilles Penney. His mother, Mrs. Wicks was the Mayoress of Gateshead. She must be aunt to Herbert Gilles Penney and née Penney, and therefore sister to John Harper Penney and Edward Penney.
7. Gifts were received from, 'Mr. R Penney and Mr. C. Penney and Miss Flo' . I suggest that Mr. R. and Mr. C. are two more younger sons of John Harper Penney and Miss Flo is Florrie Penney.
8. Similarly, Misses R. and J. and Master Stanley Penney. I suggest that R. and J. refer to Rita and Jean and Stanley is another son.
9. Similarly, Mrs. E. Penney and Miss Penney. I suggest this is Caroline Valencia Penney, wife of Edward, and Valencia Ann Harper Penney, my grandmother.
10. In 1891 John Harper was living at Tyne View Terrace in Westoe, South Shields.
n005 John Harper Penney [2gU;3gU;4gU], a son of John and Ann Penney, was born on 10 February 1843 (1843 quarter 1, South Shields, folio 24 page 214) in South Shields. "The Penney family home - Waldridge House, on Lawe Road in South Shields. I think the family lived there for many years. When I was a child I remember going round the corner to visit my grandmother and Aunties Mamie (Mildred) and Jean, in their beautiful big old house overlooking the North Marine Park and the harbour. I understand that the house was named after the Waldridge coal mine which was owned by the Gillies family in the past. Waldridge village is just a few miles west of Durham city. Waldridge House suffered some bomb damage soon after the start of the war and grandmother and Aunties moved to a rented house on Sunderland Road. They rented Waldridge house to a tenant for the duration of the war. I think my Grandmother died soon after the end of the War. 1946? (1945). My aunties lived at Waldridge house till they sold it in 1950, and bought a house in Hepscott Terrace"...Alan Clive Hetherington

During the First World War, he was first a 'Captain in Tyneside Irish' and then a Captain in Northumberland Fusiliers. He was wounded in France and invalided home. After the war they moved to Bridge of Weir in Glasgow, working as an Insurance Broker from 144 Vincent Street Glasgow. In 1926 he suffered appendicitus and was described as 'very stout'. By 1936 he was unemployed, but tried a grocery business for 6 weeks which didn't work out.
He 'retired to Bexhill', (with Reginald) 'to be able to offer seaside holidays to all the family'; 'a large 3-storied Victorian house where he decided to grow mushrooms commercially, in the basement. Unfortunately, neither he, nor, apparently, anyone else, had realised how much heat is generated by mushroom compost. The fire brigade was called in to damp down the enterprise before the house went up in flames and the basement remained damp and inhabitable thereafter!!'
